Rolled Gold
Although gold is probably the oldest metal to be
worked by man, it has endured the test of time and secured its place
amongst today's modern technology. Early metallurgists soon realized the
exclusive qualities gold has to offer and have included it in many
modern processes, for example, in the production of spectacle frames.
Because gold is naturally a soft, malleable metal, in order to make
spectacle frames it must be alloyed with other elements to strengthen
it. Rolled Gold is a process that begins with a base metal which is then
wrapped in a sleeve of raw gold material. This layer of 14 Kt Nickel
free Gold is bonded by heat and pressure to the durable base alloy. A
unique aspect of the rolled gold process is that the gold moves with the
base metal as one uniform material. This process of working the
material until it reaches the prescribed diameter makes it more durable.
The practical advantage of rolled gold frames lies in the thickness of
the gold surrounding the base metal. It is usually three to six times
that found in gold plated frames.
