Space Pen

Space Pen

How to make a Space Pen better? Make it look like a space ship. That’s just what Fisher has done with this new version of its famed, pressurized, write-anywhere pen, the Contractor Tool Space Pen.Along the way, Fisher threw in a few extra functions: spirit levels, angle and length measurements (metric and imperial) and a magnetic base. The actual pen can be removed from the ABS plastic case, and it’ll still write upside-down, underwater, or, of course, in space. Yours for $25. Or just add a few nicks along the edge of a pencil for a Russian versionMoss noted a fascination with "functional overkill" -- objects whose capabilities are rarely, if ever, needed. "The Fisher space pen was designed for NASA specifically so it can be used in a gravity-free zone. It's our biggest-selling item," he says. "We sell thousands every year."But Moss noted a counter-trend -- the tendency of some designers to eliminate function entirely. To illustrate this he showed the Internal Rolex watch -- a timepiece inside a gold band. "A Rolex isn't really about telling time," he says. "It's about prestige.".
