Understanding Exposure By Bryan Peterson

Understanding Exposure By Bryan Peterson

The following is an excerpt from Bryan Peterson’s Understanding Exposure, 3rd Edition/Revised And Updated: How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any Camera (Amphoto Books, $25.99, August, 2010). The revised edition (ISBN: 978-0-8174-3939-2) brings this best seller up-to-date for the rapidly changing world of digital photography and brings readers information on how to learn the difference between a correct exposure and a creatively correct exposure. This new edition includes updated information on advances in digital photography, such as increasingly sensitive ISOs and HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography, an expanded discussion of white balance, tips on using flash, and many new images. The section we are featuring with images and captions (there’s even more information in the accompanying text) is on night and low-light photography. This is one book that’s easy to recommend.—Editor

Photography Workshops Nyc

Photography Workshops Nyc

The purpose of the New York City Photo Workshop is to offer more than just a guided tour to New York’s most photogenic locations. As a professional photographer who lives and works in “Big Apple” for more than nine years, I will lead you to many hidden photographic gems that New York City offers, but that even most locals pass by every day and never really “see”. During the workshop, you will have the opportunity to define your objectives as a photographer and discuss different approaches that will allow you to achieve your goals.Whether you want to create better images of the Manhattan skyline, work on your composition or portraits skills in Central Park, or take candid shots in the bustling streets of Midtown, New York City offers an unlimited number of opportunities. The workshop aims to cover topics such as “getting off the “auto” mode” and learning how to better understand the way your camera works in order to reduce the amount of disappointing images and non-reproducible results. By learning how to take pictures in semi-automatic or manual modes, we are taking control of creative aspects such as depth-of-field and motion blur and we will be able to anticipate the “decisive moment”.

Senior Pictures Poses

Senior Pictures Poses

paramount that you know something about your senior before you attempt to photograph them. Does he play football? Soccer? Is she a cheerleader? A band member? What activities are they involved in away from school? Hunting? Fishing? Rodeo? Is he/she quiet and shy, or really outgoing? Knowing these things will enable you to better capture the essence of your subject. I fully expect that when faced with photographing someone who I am meeting for the first time that the first ten or fifteen minutes of shooting will be a loss. It usually takes this much time for my subjects to relax and settle in with the camera. It is important to remember that most of us are uncomfortable being photographed. This is why it is important to try to integrate hobbies and activities that are important to your subject. If they are in their element, they will be more comfortable.I have noticed that males and females have different expectations of their senior portraits. The guys are usually totally reliant on you, the photographer, to get the job done. Most would rather not have their portrait taken, but feel obligated to do so for their parents. They want it to be over, and soon. On the flip side, they are usually super compliant and open to suggestions for posing.

I had the privilege of teaching a short elective photography class to the upper elementary students at a local Christian school where Abby attends. I had such a fun time with the students! They already had a love for photography which made my job so easy! We spent two days together, first we learned the ins & outs of their point & shoot cameras as well as functions of a dslr.  They practiced their composition on the elementary students that day. The second day we took a field trip to the Sacramento Capitol to take some photos. I absolutely love the Capitol. I feel very blessed to live in this city where there is so much culture and beauty.I was very very impressed with some of the natural talent both students had. These are some of the photos that they took. Only very light edits were done to these photos for lighting adjustments and sharpening for the web.{Tanner & Manesha…you guys rock. Seriously. You both have such wonderful talent!}First: A couple of the students in action, taking photos of the elementary students.
